April 30, 2010 - "Night" Work in Progress

"Night" was created over the course of one evening and a day. Throughout the process I have taken photos of various steps in it's creation, which I am sharing here. My usual process makes use of an airbrush for the underpainting, however for this piece I chose to work entirely with paint brushes and skip the airbrush step. Clicking on the images below will enlarge them and display a description.

April 24, 2010 - "Within Reach" Work in Progress

"Within Reach" was a fun, experimental piece for me. A lot of artists in my genre create artwork of animals that depicts their face. This makes perfect sense as faces, especially eyes, are how we connect to a subject. With this piece, I wanted to draw the viewer's attention to a part of all animals that is critically important yet often overlooked: their feet. They use them to run, climb, and hunt. Without legs and feet, an animal loses a great deal of capabilities and yet few stop to admire the details of this area. With the face cropped out, the the texture and form of the paws can now be appreciated. Clicking on the progress steps below will open a larger version with a description.
